PGT 520 Impact Replacement Window

Florida Energy Regulations – Important information you should know

Important Changes to Florida Code, Energy Regulations for Windows and Doors:

Effective June 30, 2015, the state of Florida will be implementing a new building code that will affect the thermal requirements for windows. There are three major changes to note that will affect all window distributors and installers.

  1. Energy Zone 1 will be expanded to include Palm Beach, Lee, Hendry and Collier Counties.
  2. The SHGC requirement will be lowered from a 0.30 to a 0.25 in Energy Zones 1 and 2.
  3. The U-Factor requirements will be changing for Energy Zone 2. The new U-Factor requirements for Energy Zone 2 will be 0.40 for non-impact windows and 0.65 for impact windows.

Meeting The New Code

In order to meet the new code the window must meet the thermal properties in the table below.

Zone SHGC U-Factor U-Factor (Impact)
Zone 1 0.25 0.65 0.75
Zone 2 0.25 0.40 0.65

Additional Information/ Frequently Asked Questions

* What is the exact date the new code will begin being enforced?

The official date for implementation is June 30th 2015. Typically this means that any permit pulled on or after June 30th must comply with the new code. However, it is recommended that you contact your local building code official to confirm this.

* Will there be a special glass package available to meet the new thermal requirements in Florida?

No, there are already several glass package options available that will meet Florida’s new thermal requirements. As long as the glass package used meets the thermal requirements for Energy Star South then it will meet the new thermal requirements for the state of Florida.

* If a homeowner replaces one or a few windows in their home does the new code require that they replace all of the windows in order to meet the new building code?

No. With the new code in place homeowners are still able to replace a portion of the windows in their home without being required to replace them all. However, the windows being replaced must meet the new thermal requirements set forth in the updated building code.

* Are we required to meet Energy Star Southern thermal requirements?

There are no additional requirements other than meeting the thermal requirements set forth in the new code. Also, as stated above, the use of the Energy Star Southern glass package is not required, nor is general Energy Star compliance required. Energy Star is a voluntary program and not required by code. The customer can use any glass package as long as it meets the thermal requirements of the new code.
